Primer día de Río más 20 Declaración de las organizaciones no gubernamentales

Declaración de las organizaciones no gubernamentales (Sesión plenaria - 20 de junio)

Hago esta declaración en nombre de las ONG

Se siente increíble estar sentado en esta sala entre todos los líderes mundiales, y sentir toda esta energía a mi alrededor que pueden dar forma al mundo. Todos sabemos que la amenaza que enfrentamos, y no es necesario repetir la urgencia. La ciencia es muy clara. Si no cambiamos en los próximos cinco a diez años, la forma en que nuestras sociedades de la función, estaremos en peligro la supervivencia de las generaciones futuras y todas las demás especies del planeta. Sin embargo, usted sentado aquí en esta sala tienen el poder de revertir todo esto. Lo que podemos hacer aquí es el sueño de cada uno de nosotros: tener la oportunidad de ser los sabores del planeta. Es todo depende de ti.

Y sin embargo, nos encontramos al borde de la Río +20 es otro intento fallido, con los gobiernos sólo se trata de proteger sus intereses particulares en lugar de inspirar al mundo y dar a todos nosotros de nuevo la fe en la humanidad que necesitamos. Si esto ocurre, sería una gran pérdida de energía, y una gran pérdida de liderazgo.

No se puede tener un documento titulado "el futuro que queremos", sin mención alguna de los límites planetarios, puntos de inflexión, o la capacidad de carga de la Tierra. El texto actual está completamente fuera de contacto con la realidad. Para ser claros, las ONG aquí en Río de ninguna manera aprobar este documento. Ya hay más de 1.000 organizaciones e individuos han firmado en un solo día una petición llamada "El Futuro No queremos" que se niega por completo el texto actual. No de ninguna manera reflejan nuestra aspiración, y por lo tanto, exigimos que las palabras "en la plena participación con la sociedad civil" se eliminan en el primer párrafo.

Si la adopción del texto en su forma actual, no se podrá asegurar un futuro para las generaciones venideras, incluyendo sus propios hijos.

Para mencionar algunos ejemplos:

En el tema de la búsqueda de recursos para implementar el desarrollo sostenible, vemos países que utilizan la crisis económica como una excusa, mientras que al mismo tiempo, el gasto 100s de miles de millones de dólares subsidiando a la industria de combustibles fósiles, la industria más rentable del mundo. Lo primero que puedes hacer es eliminar los subsidios existentes dañinos, subsidios a los combustibles fósiles, en especial, que fue votado como el número uno durante el diálogo con la sociedad civil.

En la sección de los océanos, que no han podido dar un mandato claro para iniciar siquiera la negociación de un acuerdo de aplicación para detener el abuso de Wild West de la alta mar.

Hay muchos otros fallos en el documento relacionado con la salud de reproducción de la mujer, se perdió la oportunidad de iniciar nuevos tratados mundiales sobre la participación de la sociedad civil y en los informes de sostenibilidad, la extraordinaria falta de cualquier referencia a los conflictos armados, la energía nuclear (especialmente después de la catástrofe de Fukushima), y muchos otros.

Pero no es demasiado tarde. No creemos que se ha terminado. Usted está aquí para obtener más de tres días, y todavía se puede inspirar a nosotros y el mundo. Sería una lástima y un desperdicio para que usted venga aquí sólo y firmar un documento. Le instamos a crear una nueva voluntad política que nos lleve a ponerse de pie y aplaudir a usted como a nuestros verdaderos líderes.

Statement NGOs (Plenary session – 20th of June)

Thank you President
I am making this statement on behalf of the NGOs

It feels amazing to be sitting in this room among all the world leaders, and feeling all this power around me that can shape the World. We all know the threat that is facing us, and I do not need to repeat the urgency. Science is very clear. If we do not change in the coming five to ten years the way our societies function, we will be threatening the survival of future generations and all other species on the planet. Nevertheless, you sitting here in this room have the power to reverse all of this. What you can do here is the dream of each one of us: to have the opportunity to be the savors of the planet. It is all up to you.

And yet we stand on the brink of Rio+20 being another failed attempt, with governments only trying to protect their narrow interests instead of inspiring the World and giving all of us back the faith in humanity that we need. If this happens, it would be a big waste of power, and a big waste of leadership.

You cannot have a document titled ‘the future we want’ without any mention of planetary boundaries, tipping points, or the Earth’s carrying capacity.  The text as it stands is completely out of touch with reality. Just to be clear, NGOs here in Rio in no way endorse this document. Already more than 1,000 organisations and individuals have signed in only one day a petition called “The Future We Don’t Want” that completely refuses the current text. It does not in any way reflect our aspiration, and therefore we demand that the words “in full participation with civil society” are removed from the first paragraph.

If you adopt the text in its current form, you will fail to secure a future for the coming generations, including your own children.

To mention a few examples:

In the issue of finding resources to implement sustainable development, we see countries using the economic crisis as an excuse, while at the same time spending 100s of billions of dollars subsidizing the fossil fuel industry, the most profitable industry in the world. The first thing you can do is eliminating the existing harmful subsidies, especially fossil fuel subsidies, which was voted as the number one issue during the civil society dialogue.

Under the oceans section, you have failed to give a clear mandate to even start negotiating an implementing agreement to stop the Wild West abuse of the high seas.

There are many other failures in the document related to women’s reproduction health, missed opportunities to start new global treaties on civil society participation and on sustainability reporting, the extraordinary lack of any reference to armed conflicts, nuclear energy (especially after the Fukushima disaster), and many others.

But it is not too late. We do not believe that it is over. You are here for three more days, and you can still inspire us and the world. It would be a shame and a waste for you to only come here and sign off a document. We urge you to create new political will that would make us stand and applaud you as our true leaders.
